One Year in Detention. Researcher Tatiana Kouzina

Today, 28 June 2022, marks one year since Tatiana Kouzina, a political scientist, researcher and one of the founders of the SYMPA project (School of Young Managers in Public Administration) was detained at Minsk National Airport on her way for a short-term visit to Georgia. She was charged under two articles of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus: "Conspiracy to seize power by unconstitutional means" (part 1 of article 357) and "Appeals to actions aiming at damaging the national security of the Republic of Belarus" (part 3 of article 361). »

28 August 2021 marked the end of a two-month pretrial detention period for Tatiana Kouzina, a public policy researcher and expert at SYMPA/BIPART. After the initial two months of arrest, Tatiana Kouzina's pre-trial detention should have been either extended or changed to a milder form of restraint. Since our colleague was not released on that day, we assume that her pre-trial detention period has been extended to an indefinite period of time. »

On the 28th of June Tatiana Kouzina, an analyst and expert in the field of public administration in SYMPA/BIPART, a prominent representative of expert community in Belarus, was detained and placed in custody. Later it became known that Tatiana was accused under grave articles of the Criminal Code, which had nothing to do with her professional and teaching activities. Recently, human rights activists recognized Kouzina as a political prisoner and made an open statement for her release. »

On 14 July 2021, charges against Tatiana Kouzina, a SYMPA/BIPART expert, were made public. In its court sitting schedule for the day, the Minsk City Court referenced the following articles of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus: Part 1 of Art. 357, Part 3 of Art. 361 and Part 6 of Art. 16.  Part 1 of Art. 357: "Conspiracy or other actions aimed at seizing state power", punishable by imprisonment for a period from eight to 12 years;  »
